Sailing into Second Grade
Please use this information for any questions regarding basic second grade policies. Our second grade team works collaboratively to plan our units of study, special events, and consistent expectations for our students. We also communicate on a weekly basis with our Tuesday folders and monthly with a grade level newsletter.
Special Events
Birthdays are always a special time. If you would like to provide an appropriate snack for the class on your child’s birthday, please help us by following the guidelines below:
1. Notify the teacher before the day and check for any possible allergy or other health concerns.
2. We prefer individually wrapped snacks such as a box of Fruit Roll-Ups, Rice Krispy Treats, bags of “goldfish”, fruit, or popsicles.
3. Please DO NOT send any items that need to be cut, specifically cakes or decorated cookies.
4. We can not have a “party” to recognize a birthday, but will fit the special snack into our regular snack time in the afternoon.
Supplies/Personal Belongings
Please check periodically with your child to insure that they have the necessary school supplies. Glue sticks, pencils, and colored pencils are used frequently and need to be replenished. Students are asked to keep personal items and toys at home unless it is a special sharing time.
Homework
A separate letter will be sent to describe homework expectations. Each MONDAY your child will receive their homework folder. It will contain a “Problem of the Week” to reinforce math problem solving skills, a math skill review activity, spelling words, and a reading log for your child to record what literature they are reading. They will also have a fluency passage to practice each night. Your child’s reading log will need to be signed once a week as a part of completing their homework assignment. Once a month, your child will have a specific book project to complete and share with their classmates. All homework is due on FRIDAY.
Discipline Plan
Second graders are encouraged to be responsible for their actions. School wide expectations are followed to encourage safety, accountability, independence, and leadership. Individual behaviors in the classroom are reflected on a card system. Steps to reinforce expectations include:
1. A verbal warning
2. A five minute time out
3. A ten minute time out and a note home
4. Phone call made by the teacher or child
Please refer to the conduct section of the weekly report to reflect on your child’s actions for the week. Discussing your expectations with your child and your support are essential for your child to be successful in the classroom.
Student Information/Absences
Please return your child’s locator and information forms as soon as possible. If your child is taking any medication at school, please make sure that the proper forms are on file in the office. A note to the teacher can also be used. Illness is the primary excused absence. Family events and special trips are considered unexcused. Please make sure that your child makes up any work they miss during an absence. Having your child to school on time is also important in helping your child’s routine. Please let us know if your child will be leaving early for any special appointments. You will need to sign your child out in the office in order for us to release them from class. We appreciate your help in supporting your child.
